Makaha is a world-renowned surfer’s paradise on the west shore of Oahu. The beachfront communities of Makaha offer diverse housing options, including high-rise condos, townhouses, and single-family homes. Just beyond the beachfront neighborhoods, tucked into the lowlands of the Wai’anae mountains, is the Makaha Valley. This part of Makaha is somewhat less densely populated than the beachfront areas, providing a more open and tranquil feel. Residents of Makaha Valley are treated to refreshing ocean breezes and breathtaking views.
 
Makaha and Makaha Valley are tight-knit communities that offer a refreshing escape from the bustling city. The beaches here are pristine and popular with surfers, divers, and residents that enjoy fishing and watersports. The area is home to many surfing competitions throughout the year, including the Town and Country Pro tournament and the Buffalo’s Big Board Classic. The surf in Makaha is known for having some of the biggest waves in the world, with maximum heights topping 50 feet. The Makaha Caverns are an excellent spot for scuba diving and observing the waters that teem with marine life — beautiful fish, sharks, rays, turtles, and crabs.

Makaha is a laid-back community with a casual vibe and slow pace. The residents are beach lovers and surfing enthusiasts. The people of Makaha enjoy world-class surfing, scuba diving, and fishing. They spend as much time as possible at the beach, even if only to watch the magnificent sunset. Residents look forward to the many surfing competitions that are held in Makaha every year. When it’s time for some serenity, residents can head up into the mountains and tackle challenging hiking trails.
 

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Makaha offers many casual dining options that serve up delicious seafood and internationally-inspired cuisines. Most of the restaurants and cafes provide a welcoming beach vibe. Local favorites include Coquito’s Latin Cuisine, The Beach House by 604, and Aloha Poke.  

Residents travel to the resorts in nearby Kapolei for fine dining and can choose from several upscale and stylish venues perfect for a romantic date night. The Ko Olina Resort serves up  Asian-inspired fare at Roy’s and delicious Italian cuisine at Longhi’s The Four Seasons Resort is home to La Hiki, which offers an internationally-inspired menu and open-air dining.
 
The town of Makaha has many unique shops and boutiques and is located just a few miles from the Wai’anae Mall and the Pacific Shopping Mall.
 

Things to Do

The beautiful beaches of Makala are the centerpieces of this community. Residents spend a lot of time surfing, diving, fishing, sunbathing, and swimming at the beach. During the prime surf season, the community is the home of several championship surf tournaments, which crowd the beaches with residents and tourists. The beach is not the only natural amenity that Makaha offers; there are also many pristine parks with miles of lush hiking trails, including the Ka‘ena Point Trail, the Kaʻala Hiking Trail, and the Kamaileunu Ridge Hike. The Ka’ena trail is the easiest, being primarily flat, but still offers fantastic views. The Ka’ala Trail provides a challenging 5,.000 foot climb to the highest peak on Oahu. With a rise that high, the view from the top is unmatched. The Kamaileunu Ridge Hike is another challenging trek with steep hills and great vistas  Makaha Valley is the location of the Makaha Valley Country Club, a beautifully manicured club offering fantastic views and a challenging golf course.
